Monticello / Jeffersonian Parquet

Kashian Bros is milling, installing and finishing a classic wood floor parquet pattern for an office space in Peoria, IL. The design is known as Monticello / Jeffersonian Parquet.

Thomas Jefferson designed this parquet pattern for his home in Monticello. He believed that beauty and function were inseparable. He used this design for the floor in his parlor. It was based on a classic French pattern from the Baroque period which was inspired by his visit to France in 1760. He named the parquet pattern after his home “Monticello”.  The Monticello pattern consists of a square block with four borders around it cut at a 45 degree angle.

The dimensions we are using for this project include: 1 ½” Flatsawn Red Oak for the center squares and 2 ¼” Flat sawn Red Oak for the pickets. The finished squares will be 7 ½”.
The wood will be glued down directly over concrete, then sanded, stained and sealed with a wax / oil finish.

Additional photos will be available as we complete the project.
